Fall

Fall foliage

Ever since I started taking this photography thing a bit more seriously, fallĀ has been a mixed bag for me.

Fall is gorgeous. The sun rises later and sets earlier, which means I’m much more likely to catch some golden hour light. When I walk outside with my camera, I’m guaranteed to get beautiful shots of the fiery colours of the foliage on the trees and the fallen leaves on the ground. (Apologies to Billy Talent.)

But that’s the thing with fall photos. The falling leaves are a constant reminder that I only have a certain amount of time to capture these colours before the trees become barren. It makes me anxious knowing that the colours are only around for a short while.

When I see how quickly fall comes and goes, I feel the need to take advantage of the photographic opportunities it presents. I can’t take photos all of the time though, and that’s what drives me crazy. I can’t count the number of times I’ve spotted some beautiful trees while driving on the highway, wishing that I could just pull over and take a shot. Don’t worry; I’ve never done it. But I always wish I could.

Of course, I’m never going to feel satisfied with the number of photos I take. It’s not like I’m going to hit a finite amount and decide, “Yup, that’s enough fall photos for the year.” So, maybe I should make peace with the fact that I can’t get every foliage shot. Instead, I’m going to do what I always do – bring my camera everywhere I go and take photos whenever I can. There’s always next fall.
